Central Dalmatia
Location
Central Dalmatia
Stari Grad sits deep inside a long protected bay on the northern side of Hvar Island. Founded by the ancient Greeks in the 4th century BC, it is one of the oldest towns in Croatia and retains a calm, historic atmosphere that feels very different from the energy of Hvar Town.
Arriving by yacht, the bay stretches several kilometers inland before opening into the harbor. The town itself sits quietly along the waterfront, with stone houses, small squares, and shaded promenades along the water.
Where You’ll Spend Time
Most yachts dock along the Stari Grad waterfront or moor in the nearby marina at the entrance of the harbor.
The town center begins directly beside the harbor promenade. Narrow stone streets lead inward to small courtyards, historic churches, and quiet residential neighborhoods.
Behind the town lies the Stari Grad Plain, a UNESCO-listed agricultural landscape of vineyards and olive groves that has remained largely unchanged since ancient Greek times.
